The Mid-Atlantic states will face another round of heavy thunderstorms today, with torrential downpours and localized flash flooding as the primary concerns. Many areas have already received significant rainfall over the past several days, with portions of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey picking up several inches of rain.
With soils increasingly saturated and streams running high in some locations, additional thunderstorms today could quickly create renewed flooding problems. The greatest concern will be where storms repeatedly move over the same areas, producing rapid rainfall rates, urban flooding, and sudden rises on smaller creeks and streams.
The unsettled pattern is expected to continue through the weekend, with additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms likely across the Mid-Atlantic. This will keep the threat of localized flash flooding elevated, especially in areas that continue to receive repeated heavy downpours.
Farther west, severe thunderstorms are expected across the Northern Plains today. The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall as they develop and move through the region.
Overall, flooding remains the primary concern across the Mid-Atlantic, while damaging winds and hail will be the main severe weather threats across the Northern Plains.
