Severe Weather Discussion

Severe thunderstorms are expected today from the western Great Lakes through the Central Plains and westward toward the Front Range of the Rockies. Thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning, and perhaps an isolated tornado.

Some of the strongest storms may organize into clusters or lines as they move eastward, maintaining a threat of damaging winds and locally heavy rainfall into the nighttime hours.

By tomorrow, the severe weather threat will shift farther east into the Midwest as the storm system progresses. Additional thunderstorms may become severe, with damaging winds, hail, and heavy rainfall as the primary concerns.

Another area to watch tomorrow afternoon will be the Mid-Atlantic states, particularly portions of Virginia and the Delmarva Peninsula. A stalled frontal boundary may become active again as warm, humid air interacts with the front, triggering renewed thunderstorm development.

The strongest Mid-Atlantic storms may produce damaging wind gusts and torrential downpours. With recent heavy rainfall across parts of the region, localized flash flooding could quickly become a concern where storms repeatedly affect the same areas.

Overall, the severe weather threat will remain focused across the central United States today before shifting into the Midwest tomorrow, while renewed thunderstorm activity may also bring damaging winds and flooding rainfall to parts of the Mid-Atlantic.
