Severe Weather Discussion
The primary severe weather threat today will be across the Carolinas, where thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging wind gusts, torrential rainfall, frequent lightning, and localized flooding. While widespread tornado activity is not anticipated, an isolated tornado cannot be completely ruled out with the strongest storms.
Another area of concern will be across Arizona, where thunderstorms developing over western New Mexico and eastern Arizona are expected to move toward the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas this afternoon and evening. These storms may produce strong outflow winds, blowing dust, and haboobs, along with heavy rainfall that could result in localized flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and normally dry washes.
Outside of these primary severe weather areas, scattered thunderstorms will develop during the heat of the day from the Carolinas westward across the Gulf Coast states, Texas, and into the Desert Southwest. Most of these storms will be typical summertime thunderstorms, but a few could become locally strong, producing gusty winds, frequent lightning, and brief periods of very heavy rainfall.
Overall, today's greatest severe weather threats include damaging winds across the Carolinas and strong desert thunderstorms across Arizona, while scattered gusty thunderstorms will remain possible across much of the southern United States.:::
