NORTHERN PLAINS STORMS

Updated by Henry Margusity

The primary severe weather threat today will be across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, where thunderstorms are expected to develop from eastern Montana into North Dakota, northern Minnesota, and nearby areas. The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a few tornadoes, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

Elsewhere, severe weather will be relatively limited as a ridge of high pressure builds across much of the eastern United States. Hotter temperatures and increasing humidity will become the dominant weather story across the East, with only isolated afternoon thunderstorms expected in most locations.

The recent stretch of heavy rainfall across the Midwest will also begin to ease. As precipitation diminishes this week, rivers and streams should gradually begin to recede, allowing water levels to slowly return toward normal. While isolated flooding may persist in some locations, the overall flood threat is expected to decrease as drier weather settles into the region.

Overall, today's main weather concern will be the severe thunderstorms across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, while much of the rest of the country transitions to a hotter and generally quieter weather pattern.
